The function of this model is to provide records of the provenance events in which an object is known to have been involved in during its existence. In particular this constitutes events of transfer of ownership and custody of the object or rights to an object, including acts of payment between parties, as well as changes of physical location and witnessing of the object through acts such as inventory. The provenance model is intended to facilitate the tracking of the different activities in which an object has been involved in its existence so as to determine its overall provenance and to understand particular events that have occurred to the object in its history.

This model enables the documentation of a single, human individual. This could be an artist, a seller, buyer or collector amongst others.
The function of this model is to enable the documentation of individual human beings. This model is intended to aid provenance researchers to trace data in relation to individual artworks over time with a focus on provenance history.

This model enables the documentation of textual resources. These are typically sales catalogues or stock books which stand as witness to provenance events in the past.
The function of this model is to enable the documentation of textual works of cultural historical importance. By textual works is meant individually identifiable written documents with some intellectual content or a part of such a document. Please note, the textual work model is intended to facilitate the recording of the document itself as an intellectual object, not a particular physical copy. In the PIR content this model is typically used to record overall sales catalogues, auction catalogues and stock books as well as their individual entries and, where appropriate, pages and other subdivision. This model is intended to aid provenance researchers to locate the original source information based upon which record of individual assertions within records have been made in the Provenance Index.

The place reference data model provides a list of standard fields that are often found present in the general description of a place. Place here is interpreted as a geometric extent used for locating entities relative to a reference space. The scope of entities that this reference model aims to cover are places as typically documented in gazetteers. Examples of places would be Edmonton (the inhabited city), Alberta (the administrative district), Canada (the country). The aim of this reference model is to cover basic descriptors that are typically employed in the documentation of a place, usually by a gazetteer. This reference model aims to remain at a general level description, providing a consolidated, high-level reference data model of most commonly reused descriptors for a place as such and to provide for these, in turn, a set of standard semantic mappings to the CIDOC CRM. Moreover, each field is marked with regards to its potential functionality with regards to instance matching between overlapping datasets. This level of modelling is seen as a necessary basic reference point on which to build more complex documentation.

The collection item reference data model provides a list of standard fields that are typically present in the general description of physical documents in a cultural heritage data system. The physical information carrier is taken here in the sense of a movable, physical item of some sort such as would be typically inventoried by a museum, archive or library. Specific documentation of elements of a physical information carrier depend highly upon the kind of document it is. This reference model does not intend to cover such specificities but to remain at a general level description, providing a consolidated, high-level reference data model of most commonly reused descriptors for a physical information carrier and to provide for these, in turn, a set of standard semantic mappings to the CIDOC CRM. Moreover, each field is marked with regards to its potential functionality with regards to instance matching between overlapping datasets.
